The aim of this project is to facilitate better communication and stronger working relationships between Early Years Providers and other appropriate professionals, in order to better support children and families at an early stage (pre-Early Help or Early Help level).

The outcomes we are looking to achieve are:

  • Increased knowledge and confidence around early support amongst Early Years professionals
  • Increased number of Early Help initiations and pre-Early Help support interventions in Early Years
  • Improved relationships between Early Help professionals and other professionals supporting families and children

The impact of this project will be:

  • Families are supported to find solutions to difficulties at an early stage
  • Less families with young children reach crisis point
  • Less families with young children are subject to statutory interventions

Why is this project needed?

The number of children subject to statutory interventions is skewed for 0 to 5s - there are a high proportion of children on Child Protection and Child in Need Plans but a relatively low proportion of initiations of Early Help assessments for children within the Early Years. This may be partly due to a low number of Early Help referrals and initiations from the Early Years sector.  The Council is seeking to reduce the need for statutory interventions for families and children.  This project seeks to redress this balance.

Training around Signs of Wellbeing and the Early Help Agenda has been identified as a training need for the Early Years sector and engagement will be strengthened by having some sector specific training and support to access multiagency training

There is strong support from Early Years Providers for increased engagement and joint working with partners in order to better support children and families
