Public health 5-19 - health conditions - special needs
The Learning Difficulties Team work with children with developmental delay/learning disabilities under the age of 18 years old. They are also able to offer support to families going through the autism assessment process, or with an autism diagnosis under the age of 11, they would also be able to signpost / direct to other services in the local area that they felt might be helpful or appropriate.
They meet with parents to understand theirs and their Childs needs and then talk to them about what they can offer.
They primarily engage with parents to support them in being able to attend a parent programme and/or workshop supporting them to understand their Child's diagnosis and give them additional strategies on how best to meet their child's needs.
If you are wanting to refer into the Learning Disabilities Team please download this referral form (DOC 110KB) and look at their referral guidance (PDF 704KB)
If you would like to discuss this further please make an appointment with the E-School Nurse Service who will be able to help.

Estimates tell us that around 1 in 100 children have Autism Spectrum Disorder- or ASD.
This means there are children with an ASD in most school, whether diagnosed or not.
It is also widely recognised that the methods used to support children with ASD can also benefit other children in the classroom.

Co-ordination and physical difficulties can take different forms. Weakness in fine motor skills makes it hard to direct small muscles groups like fingers. Weakness in gross motor skills affects large muscle groups in the body such as legs. And trouble with hand-eye co-ordination can make things like buttoning a shirt difficult.
Even if a child doesn't have a diagnosis there are things you can be aware of to help improve and support a co-ordination and physical problem if you can't find something specific to your enquiry in our resources please contact your locality direct.
