Event: Rebecca Stephens: An Easy Day For A Lady

< Return to calendar
Description
Rebecca Stephens is the First British Woman to climb Mt Everest and the Seven Summits. She was a successful journalist when, exploring the question- why do climbers climb?, she accompanied an expedition attempting the North East Ridge of Mount Everest in 1989, reaching the first camp at 7,100m. She then made a decision that she wanted to climb the mountain herself.

Rebecca's talk will be largely personal, drawing on her own experiences and observations. For example, upon meeting other women Everesters at Junko Tabei's 20th anniversary in Japan in 1995. She will also touch on cultural norms and expectations of old about woman climbers, and will refer to other women on Everest and beyond.
