  • Holocaust Memorial with Cumbria Libraries, Craft a Butterfly
Help to create a County wide art instillation by decorating a butterfly in response to the poem The Butterfly by Pavel Friedmann. Pick up a butterfly at your library or draw your own. The Butterfly The last, the very last, So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow. Perhaps if the sun's tears would sing against a white stone... Such, such a yellow Is carried lightly way up high. It went away I'm sure because it wished to kiss the world goodbye. For seven weeks I've lived in here, Penned up inside this ghetto But I have found my people here. The dandelions call to me And the white chestnut candles in the court. Only I never saw another butterfly. That butterfly was the last one. Butterflies don't live in here, In the ghetto. • Holocaust Memorial with Cumbria Libraries, Messages of Hope
Light the Darkness Messages of Hope Holocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own. it's a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. Write a message of hope on a candle and add it to our display. This could be as simple as, 'I promise to be kind' or 'I will stand up against hatred'. Because being the light in the darkness starts with all of us. Pick up a candle at your library or draw your own.

  • The Donkey Field | Short Film and Artist Talk
Cinema | (15) | 60 minutes | 27th January 17:45 (Pay What You Decide) Holocaust Memorial Day Presented by artist and director Sarah Dobai Supported by the Lake District Holocaust Project The Donkey Field weaves a link between an antisemitic attack in 1944 on a young boy on a piece of common land known locally as the donkey field and the story of the persecution of Marie and Balthazar in the acclaimed film Au Hasard Balthazar (Robert Bresson, 1966). The film features a text, based on sections of a memoir of Budapest in the last year of the war, and scenes which re-enact and reframe Bresson's allegorical story about the scapegoating of innocent subjects. Partly shot on the streets of present-day Budapest, under a regime criticised for its anti-immigrant policies and harsh treatment of refugees, The Donkey Field underlines the relevance of the boy's story to other, more recent stories of displacement and persecution.

Stage on Screen | (12A) | 140 minutes | 27th January | Starts 7pm | Tickets £15.50 | Concessions £13.50 | Screen Two | Encore Screening Regarded as Britain's greatest living playwright (Times), Tom Stoppard's critically acclaimed new play Leopoldstadt is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance. At the beginning of the 20th century, Leopoldstadt was the old, crowded Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. But Hermann Merz, a factory owner and baptised Jew now married to Catholic Gretl, has moved up in the world. We follow his family's story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. A company of 40 actors represent each generation of the family in this epic, but intimate play. Filmed live on stage in London's West End, Tom Stoppard's masterpiece is magnificent (Independent) and should not be missed.
